A midwinter feast to remember

What happens when a My Kitchen Rules champion, a pair of generous locals, and a top-tier mixologist come together? A truly unforgettable evening — all in support of a great cause.

As part of the Hirepool Charity Classic Auction, one of the most sought-after items was a private dinner experience cooked by Chris Wright, winner of My Kitchen Rules. The hosts, Tony and Debbie Brett, chose to celebrate with a festive Midwinter Christmas dinner — and what a celebration it was!

Not only did Tony and Debbie make the winning bid, they also generously supplied the meat for the meal, adding a beautiful personal touch to the evening. Chris, with his signature flair and culinary brilliance, delivered a meal that was both heartwarming and delicious — the kind of food that brings people together and leaves lasting memories.

To complete the experience, Kenny Vaugh, Food and Beverage Manager at Edgewater Lake Wānaka, crafted an incredible selection of drinks and cocktails for the evening. His thoughtful creations elevated the dinner and added a sparkling touch of hospitality magic to the event.

Events like these are about more than just great food and drink — they’re about community spirit, generosity, and connection. We are deeply grateful to Chris, Tony and Debbie, and Kenny for donating their time, talents, and resources to support our cause.

Thanks to everyone who got involved in the Hirepool Charity Classic Auction, a phenomenal $45,500 was raised for the Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust. These funds go directly to supporting local families facing the financial strain of their children’s medical needs. Because of your kindness, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.

These lovely words from Chris really summarise it all:

“It was an honour to cook for a group of friends who donated so generously in support of our local tamariki’s health and wellbeing. From local lamb to Central Otago pinot, a true mid-winter Christmas was celebrated.

A night full of flavour, laughter, and purpose — and a reminder that real community is built around shared tables and open hearts.” – Chris Wright
