One of the things we appreciate about many of the experts who support the families in our region, is they often take a full-family approach to a child’s challenges. Beyond working with the child, they also work with the parents. We recently received a message recently from a mum who wanted to share how much things had changed for her family since the therapy sessions we had funded.
Before the programme began, the family was under real strain. One of her children was struggling with instructions, transitions, emotional regulation and separating at school, and it was often showing up as aggressive behaviour, long meltdowns and conflict at home. Her other child was regularly caught in the middle of it — feeling responsible for looking after their sibling, or getting upset when things blew up.
Through the sessions, she learned how much of a difference clear and consistent boundaries make, alongside positive reinforcement and teaching compliance as a foundation for emotional development. She was struck by how much early groundwork in these areas can shape how a child copes as they head into adolescence. Just as importantly, she came away with practical strategies, and the confidence to use them calmly and consistently.
The shift at home has been significant. Less conflict, better sleep, a household that feels safer for everyone in it. Her daughter now looks forward to school, manages the transition into class, and has made a new friend. Her son gets to just be a kid with his own friends again, instead of carrying the weight of looking after his sister.
She wanted us to pass on her thanks — not just for the funding, but for the way the whole process was handled. No judgement, just encouragement and space to learn. It’s the kind of result and feedback that makes us so proud of what our Trust helps families achieve.
