Sometimes the clearest way to see the value of funded support is through what happens in the weeks right after an assessment.
We recently helped fund a diagnostic assessment for a family. These can be quite a financial stretch for many families, but are so important as this story will tell us. This family had been struggling and needed more support, but didn’t have the diagnosis to make the pathway clear. The school had also noticed some challenges and supported them in seeking a diagnosis.
Through this assessment the child was diagnosed with ADHD and has since started a trial of medication on their practictioner’s advice.
A week after starting the medication trial, the child’s teacher sent an update that says more than any statistic could. She’d noticed real changes, including better focus, deeper engagement in art, long stretches of concentration on projects, and an overall sense of calm and contentment through the week.
During one particular day of art activities, the child chose to sit and work alongside a quieter group, seeming to seek out that calming environment and settling into it comfortably for a full two-hour block.
It’s a good reminder of what timely assessment and the right support, at the right moment, can open up for a child and their families.
